Early tetrapods grew slowly or moderately, like modern amphibians; rapid juvenile growth evolved later with amniotes.
What we know now
Rapid juvenile growth was already present in some stem tetrapods more than 320 million years ago. Early tetrapods used a wider range of growth strategies than the old amphibian-like ancestral model allowed.
Why it changed
Bone histology from juvenile Whatcheeria deltae revealed fibrolamellar bone, a tissue associated with rapid growth, even though mature individuals largely lost that early-growth signature through remodeling.
