Dire wolves were close relatives of gray wolves within the genus Canis.

What we know now

Dire wolves were not close gray-wolf relatives within Canis. Ancient DNA first showed a much deeper split in 2021, and higher-coverage genomes published in 2026 now suggest that dire wolves had an admixed ancestry involving two ancient canid lineages.

Why it changed

Their wolf-like skeletons had made a close relationship with gray wolves seem plausible. Ancient DNA provided direct evidence of ancestry, first overturning that placement and later showing that the dire-wolf lineage itself had a more complicated, admixed origin.

Dire wolves looked enough like gray wolves that they were classified for most of their scientific history as Canis dirus. A separate genus, Aenocyon, had been proposed in 1918, but the familiar Canis placement remained dominant.

The first strong genetic test came in 2021. Researchers recovered ancient DNA from five dire wolves dating from about 13,000 to more than 50,000 years ago. Their genomes did not group closely with gray wolves. Instead, the dire-wolf lineage appeared to have separated much earlier from living wolf-like canids, supporting the revived name Aenocyon dirus.

The 2021 study also suggested that dire wolves had evolved largely in isolation, with no detectable gene flow from gray wolves or coyotes. Better genomes changed that part of the picture. In 2026, researchers published higher-coverage paleogenomes and found evidence for ancient admixture in dire-wolf ancestry.

Their model placed roughly two-thirds of dire-wolf ancestry in a lineage sister to the group containing gray wolves, coyotes and dholes, with about one-third coming from a more basal Canini lineage.

So the main 2021 correction still stands: dire wolves were not simply close gray-wolf relatives within Canis. What changed again in 2026 was the history of the deeper lineage, which now appears to have formed through admixture rather than long, complete isolation.
