Some shell-, bone-, or organism-shaped stones are generated inside rocks by mineral or 'plastic' forces rather than being the remains of once-living organisms.

What we know now

Fossils are preserved remains, impressions, traces, or other evidence of past life. They typically form when organisms or traces are buried and preserved in sediment, sometimes with later mineral replacement.

Why it changed

Seventeenth-century anatomy and stratigraphy increasingly linked fossil forms to living organisms and sedimentary deposition. Nicolaus Steno's work on shark teeth and rock layers became a landmark in showing how organic remains could become enclosed in stone.

Early “fossils” were not automatically understood as dead organisms.

The word itself once meant broadly things dug from the Earth, including crystals, mineral concretions, artifacts, and organic-looking stones. That made the problem harder than our modern category suggests.

Some scholars recognized organic origins. Others proposed that Earth possessed a plastic, formative, or mineral force capable of generating shell-like and bone-like forms inside rock. The idea avoided difficult questions: How could marine shells reach mountains? How could solid rock form around them? And what if a fossil resembled no living species in a world where extinction itself was controversial?

The transition depended on joining biology to geology. In 1666, Nicolaus Steno dissected a shark and recognized that mysterious “tongue stones” closely resembled shark teeth. His 1669 work then developed principles explaining how sediments accumulate in layers and how solid objects can become enclosed as those sediments turn to rock.

Steno did not instantly settle every fossil controversy, and Flood explanations remained influential. But the combination of anatomical comparison, stratigraphy, and eventually extinction transformed fossils into evidence of past life and past environments.

Because Renaissance scholars held multiple competing fossil theories, this card is not assigned a precise lifespan.
