What we know now

Barn Swallows and related migratory swallows travel seasonally between breeding and wintering regions, sometimes covering thousands of kilometers. They do not spend winter submerged in mud.

Why it changed

Systematic observation, experiments, expanding travel records, ringing, and eventually direct migration tracking accumulated evidence for long-distance seasonal movement. Eighteenth-century naturalists such as Gilbert White and John Hunter actively tested the hibernation claim.

Bird migration is obvious only after someone has connected the same populations across enormous distances.

European swallows appeared reliably in spring and disappeared in autumn. Where could such small birds possibly go? Long-distance migration across seas and continents sounded extraordinary, while many familiar animals genuinely did become torpid during winter.

Naturalists therefore debated whether swallows hibernated locally, sometimes supposedly clustering underwater or burying themselves in the mud of ponds. The idea persisted into the eighteenth century and was defended in learned publications.

Gilbert White treated the seasonal disappearance of swallows as an empirical problem rather than something to settle by authority. He accumulated observations for years, though he remained open to some form of torpor. Anatomist John Hunter went further: he confined swallows with access to water, reeds, and mud to test whether they would hibernate. They did not.

The evidence for migration became overwhelming through travel observations, recoveries of marked birds, systematic ringing, radar, geolocators, and satellite tracking.

The old theory arose from a genuine observational gap rather than simple credulity. A bird could vanish from one landscape, and before global tracking there was no easy way to watch where it went next.

Because hibernation and migration coexisted as competing explanations rather than forming one clean consensus, this card is not assigned a precise lifespan.
