Aristotle placed comets inside a much larger division of the cosmos. The Moon marked an important boundary: the heavens above were orderly and enduring, while the region below was the realm of change, weather, generation, and decay. In Meteorology, Aristotle grouped comets with meteors and other phenomena associated with the region of air and water and explained them through terrestrial “exhalations.”
That classification mattered because it linked comets to a coherent physical picture rather than treating them as inexplicable apparitions. It also helps explain why the claim survived so long. Aristotelian Meteorology later became part of the natural-philosophy tradition studied in medieval and Renaissance universities.
The 1577 comet created a particularly powerful test. Tycho Brahe attempted to determine its distance using parallax. If the comet were nearby in Earth’s atmosphere, its apparent position should shift substantially when viewed from different locations. Tycho found far too little parallax for an atmospheric object and concluded that it lay beyond the Moon. The result challenged both the comet theory and the supposedly sharp physical boundary between an unchanging heaven and a changeable terrestrial realm.
There were dissenting traditions before Tycho, including medieval Islamic astronomers who placed some comets farther away, so the Aristotelian position was never the only idea in existence. Its importance lies in how long it remained a major scholarly framework.
