Not a fact anymore

Food webs were expected to depend ultimately on photosynthetic primary production powered by sunlight.

What we know now

Some ecosystems do not begin with sunlight. Certain microorganisms can make organic matter using energy released by chemical reactions rather than photosynthesis. This process, called chemosynthesis, can support entire food webs in dark environments such as deep-sea hydrothermal vents.

Not a fact anymore

A coral reef is a solid mass of living coral.

What we know now

Only a thin outer layer of a coral colony is living tissue. Reef frameworks contain accumulated calcium-carbonate skeletons, dead coral, sediments, algae, sponges, microbes, and many other organisms.
